Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) is a very safe and effective way of eliminating large varicose veins that are a result of leaky valves that in the past would have required surgery. This procedure can be done in the office and requires no anesthesia.
With this technique we can eliminate large varicose vein branches of the great or small saphenous vein which are not visible, vulvar varicose veins, perforating veins, as well as varicose veins that reappear following “Stripping and Ligation”.
Prior to the use of UGFS, only visible surface varicose veins could be treated safely and reliably using sclerotherapy. Today with Ultrasound scanning, using color flow doppler imaging we now have a way of “seeing” these varicose veins below the skin. This allows precise injection of the non working vein at its highest source – the vein’s leaky valve which results in its complete disappearance along with the symptoms it caused.
Following a UGFS session patients can return to all their normal daily activities including exercise. A follow up visit is scheduled at 4 weeks, six months and one year later in order to scan the treated vein and determine if the treated vein has remained closed and finally disappeared.
